Propecia Side Effects 2011

by admin on May 23rd, 2011

Men who are losing their hair may be aware of Propecia, a medicine that is used to slow the progression of baldness and aid in hair growth, but they may be unaware of permanent Propecia side effects involving erectile dysfunction.

About Propecia

Propecia is a once- a-day prescription pill that is shown to reduce male pattern baldness. Approved by the FDA in 1997, the drug blocks a male hormone called DHT, which is found in the scalp, by shrinking hair follicles until they can no longer produce visible hair.

Since 50% of men will experience some type of hair loss by the time they turn 50, Propecia was seen as an option to help men maintain their hair, particularly on the crown. In order to see results, Propecia must be taken regularly. Furthermore, its benefits will not last once it is no longer taken.

Although many men have seen success with Propecia, others have also had troubling side effects.

Propecia Sexual Side Effects

Because Propecia affects the male hormone, it can also cause breast growth and tenderness and testicular pain. More seriously, some men who have taken Propecia have experienced sexual side effects including low libido, erectile dysfunction and decreased arousal.

Although Propecia’s manufacturer, Merck, says that these side effects will stop once the men stop taking the drug, some Propecia users have found that isn’t so.

In fact, a study of 71 men who took Propecia reveals that over 90% of them had sexual side effects, and that those side effects have continued even years after discontinuing the medicine.

Another new information indicates that this may not be such a small number. A recent article by CBS News reports that 5 to 23 percent of the millions of men who take finasteride may be affected by long-term Propecia erectile dysfunction. For many men who are prescribed this drug when they are as young as 18, this presents the possibility of years of impotence, during the prime period for dating, marriage and starting a family.

Although there is no concrete answer on when or if normal sexual function will resume, men who have had these side effects after using this hair loss medication may want to consider their legal options. We are currently investigating Propecia lawsuit claims on behalf of men who have suffered permanent erectile dysfunction problems after using finasteride.
